Description

Impressive, delicate, adorable, classic and unsurpassed gardenia! Whatever adjective we use, it is too little to describe gardenia, the ornamental plant that, along with the rose, has the most fanatical fans in Greece. It stands out with its lovely white fragrant flowers and glossy leaves.

Care

Gardenias need a cool, semi-shaded environment to thrive and avoid planting them in places where the midday sun can see them. Place it in a relatively sheltered position, away from hot winds, as well as strong north winds. Gardenia needs enough light to bloom, good ventilation and a relative humidity. Avoid contact with direct sunlight, especially in summer, as it causes burns on the leaves and causes the buds to drop. Sweet afternoon light helps our gardenia's healthy growth.

Watering

Gardenias need very good quality water that does not contain salts. Rainwater is very beneficial and it is important to allow it to have exposure to rain. Gardenia needs watering twice a week during the spring and autumn season and at least every 2 days during the summer season. It is important that gardenias are watered regularly, otherwise their buds may fall off before they open.

Temperature

Gardenias are sensitive to the intense frost of winter and the high temperatures of summer. Ideal temperatures for growing and flowering are in a temperature range of 10-20°C.

Transplanting

Gardenia belongs to the acidophilic plants, such as hydrangea, camellia and azalea, so in order to grow and flower it needs low pH soil, such as brown soil, rye soil and spruce soil. Alternatively, for transplanting gardenias, we can purchase special soil for acidophiles. Choose a pot, clay or plastic, 1-2 sizes larger than the pot the plant was planted in and make sure it has holes in the base to allow excess water to escape.

Tips

Gardenias do not like sudden temperature changes in the surrounding environment, either towards cold or towards heat. Such a change can cause the gardenia to drop buds, wilting of the foliage and even complete drying of the plant.
