Description

The achemea belongs to the same family as the bromeliad, which is why it is also referred to as the "bromeliad with the pink flower". It is native to Brazil and in its natural tropical environment it grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks with narrow leathery grey-green leaves that emerge from the centre of the plant in the form of a rosette. The most distinctive feature of the spike is the bracts that emerge from the centre of the plant, which are pink in colour and give the impression of a majestic flower. These pink leaves remain on the plant for several months. The true flower of the spike flower grows between the bracts, is quite small, blue in colour and is kept on the plant for a short time.

Care

To enjoy a vibrant and colourful spike in the house, place it in a very bright spot where the direct rays of the sun don't hit it. Strong sunlight can cause extensive burns on the leaves of the achema and weaken the plant.

Watering:

The achemea has low water requirements and needs light watering. We usually water it once a week in the spring and summer season and about every 4-5 days in the hot summer season. In the winter period it needs much more sparse watering about every 10 days.

Temperature:

In areas of southern Greece, the achemea can also grow outdoors, in a semi-shaded position on the west balcony of our house, although during the winter season it is advisable to bring it indoors, as it is not resistant to the winter frost.

Transplanting:

For transplanting, choose a mixture for houseplants with added perlite for high drainage.

The achemea belongs to the plants that have the ability to filter and clean the air from harmful substances and in combination with its impressive appearance it is an ideal choice for decoration in offices and business premises.
