Description

The olive tree is an integral part of the Mediterranean landscape and has been cultivated since ancient times for its fruit, from which the precious olive oil is produced. The olive is also used in horticulture for ornamental purposes because of its glossy, compact foliage and as an ornamental plant it is planted in pots on the balcony and indoors, as it is a symbol of fruitfulness, success and longevity. The crown of the olive tree is usually shaped by gardeners into a characteristic ball shape, but it is often kept in a more free-form shape.

Care

When planted in a pot in the yard or on the balcony, the olive tree requires a bright position, preferably semi-shaded and protected from wind and frost. If we want to place it indoors, we should provide it with a bright location, with good ventilation, away from radiators, cold and hot drafts, and glass windows.

Watering

It requires frequent watering, three times a week in the summer months, once a week in winter and definitely twice a week in spring and autumn.

Temperature

The olive tree is not particularly sensitive to cold and frost, and in the summer months it thrives in the sun and heat.

Transplanting

For planting the olive tree we use a large round pot, at least 40-50 cm in diameter, with a drainage hole in the bottom to allow water to drain away. A light soil mixture containing perlite is needed. An ideal soil is peat, which is available in our shop.

Tips

When planted in a pot, the olive tree needs to be sprayed once a month, from early spring to mid-autumn, as a preventive protection against insects that attack the tender vegetation.
